One of tile's biggest advantages is its low maintenance requirements. But "low maintenance" doesn't mean "no maintenance." With Sacramento's dusty summers, occasional muddy winters, and hard water, a little regular care goes a long way.
Daily & Weekly Maintenance
For Tile Floors
- Sweep or vacuum 2-3x weekly - Sacramento dust builds up quickly, especially in summer
- Mop weekly with warm water and pH-neutral cleaner
- Use doormats to catch dirt before it reaches your tile
- Clean spills immediately to prevent staining
For Shower Tile
- • Squeegee after each use - Prevents hard water buildup (Sacramento water is quite hard)
- • Spray with daily shower cleaner - Prevents soap scum
- • Leave door/curtain open - Allows ventilation to prevent mildew
- • Run bathroom fan 20+ minutes after showering
Sacramento Hard Water Tip
Our tap water is moderately hard, leading to white mineral deposits on tile and fixtures. A 50/50 vinegar-water solution works great for regular cleaning—just avoid using it on natural stone, which can be damaged by acid.
Monthly Deep Cleaning
Grout Cleaning
Grout is porous and absorbs dirt over time. Monthly cleaning keeps it looking fresh:
- Mix baking soda with water to form a paste
- Apply to grout lines with an old toothbrush or grout brush
- Let sit 5-10 minutes
- Scrub gently and rinse thoroughly
- For stubborn stains, use hydrogen peroxide or oxygen bleach
Tile Deep Clean
- • Porcelain/Ceramic: All-purpose tile cleaner or diluted vinegar
- • Natural Stone: Stone-specific pH-neutral cleaner only
- • Glass Tile: Glass cleaner or vinegar solution
Seasonal Maintenance for Sacramento
Summer (Hot & Dusty)
- • Increase sweeping frequency
- • Check grout for cracks (heat expansion)
- • Clean ceiling fan dust that settles on floors
- • Address any outdoor-indoor transitions
Winter (Wet Season)
- • Add extra mats at entries for mud
- • Clean tracked-in mud promptly
- • Monitor grout in showers for mildew
- • Check sealing on natural stone
Annual Maintenance
Grout Sealing
Unsealed grout absorbs stains and moisture. Most grout should be resealed every 1-2 years:
- • Deep clean grout first
- • Let dry completely (24 hours)
- • Apply grout sealer with applicator brush
- • Wipe excess from tile surface
- • Allow to cure before using space
Natural Stone Sealing
Marble, travertine, and other natural stones require sealing every 6-12 months. Test by dropping water on the surface—if it absorbs rather than beading, it's time to reseal.
What to Avoid
- ✗Vinegar on natural stone - Acid damages marble and travertine
- ✗Bleach on colored grout - Can cause discoloration
- ✗Abrasive scrubbers on glazed tile - Can scratch the finish
- ✗Oil-based cleaners - Leave residue that attracts dirt
- ✗Excess water - Standing water can seep into grout
